Somló: Best wineries, wine tastings and wines

The Nagy-Somló wine region, although not confined to Somló Hill alone, is nonetheless identified with it. The peculiarly shaped volcanic butte is often said to look just like the hat the Lord left behind. It is indisputable that this ancient wine region has always been the birthplace of great wines, providing impeccably structured, long-ageable, “fiery” wines for centuries. The main varieties are juhfark, furmint, olaszrizling, and hárslevelű but there are also beautiful experiments with red wines. A few years ago, a transition to fully organic cultivation began at the regional level. As a result, Great-Somló may become the first of our wine regions where you can taste organic wines everywhere.
