The Oremus estate, today spanning 100 hectares, was founded in 1993 as the sister winery of Spain’s Vega Sicilia. Its vineyards are spread across ten different crus in four municipalities of the Tokaj wine region — each with its own soil and microclimate. The volcanic rhyolite and andesite bedrock often hide semi-precious stones such as jasper, amber and obsidian.
The winery and vineyards
In post-communist Hungary, Oremus has become a symbol of Tokaj’s rebirth. The Álvarez family, owners of the Vega Sicilia group, successfully combined the legacy of one of the world’s greatest wines with modernisation and technological progress. In order to achieve the highest possible quality, every step of the production process has been carefully studied, while a gravity-flow winery was built with respect to local traditions.
The jewel of the estate is its three-level labyrinth of cellars, stretching nearly two kilometres underground — protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. These hand-carved volcanic tuff cellars have preserved Tokaji wines since the 13th century. Here, wines mature for years in barrels made from premium Zemplén oak, deep within the maze of cellar passages. All vineyards are classified as first growths according to the historic 1803 Szirmay classification. The namesake Oremus vineyard, located in Sátoraljaújhely, holds a special place in the history of Tokaj and its aszú wines: legend says that in 1631, Máté Szepsi Laczkó crafted the first aszú wine from this very site, in honour of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy, wife of Prince György Rákóczi I of Transylvania.
The wines
A noble wine crowns the table and accompanies the most memorable moments in life — making it an elegant, meaningful gift for those who matter to us.
Mandolás is our estate Furmint, showing the full magic that Oremus vineyards are capable of. It is one of our best-known wines and has gained serious international recognition. Its youthful energy is admired by many, while its aromas of white fruits and white flowers captivate almost everyone. It ages gracefully and retains its beauty for years.
Petrács is our single-vineyard Furmint, whose uniqueness comes not from technology, but from the vineyard itself. The Petrács cru has a different bedrock and soil than all our other sites. Its grapes grow on steep rows of 65–70-year-old vines, worked only by humans and horses — no machines have ever entered the vineyard. The resulting wine shows remarkable minerality: dense, tight, lean and concentrated. Its elegance is admirable, its flavour spectrum impressively layered — a complex, philosophical wine with a long life ahead.
Oremus Late Harvest is surprisingly rich, joyfully sweet and bursting with fruit, yet lifted by playful acidity. Several varieties are blended: Muscat brings the aroma, Furmint the backbone, while Zeta, Kövérszőlő and Hárslevelű add the spice. Its floral, dried-fruit, citrus and lightly honeyed notes are perfectly balanced. Easy to drink, easy to love.
Oremus Aszú — the golden heart of Tokaj — appears in three versions, all crafted with the utmost care and without compromise, following traditional methods. Their structure, sugar and complexity differ, and therefore their flavour profiles too — and that is precisely where the magic lies. Each has its own gastronomic role and purpose, but beauty and individuality unite them.
Eszencia stands above all other sweet wines — a truly unique elixir. From 1,000 kilograms of aszú berries, only 25–30 litres of pure nectar are obtained by the pressure of their own weight. The nose reveals clean botrytis, mineral hints and baked apricot. It defies time.
Visits and experiences
A winery and cellar tour with tasting takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and must be booked in advance. The visit begins in our award-winning winery, built in 2001, where we show the full journey of Tokaji wine — from grape intake to bottle ageing, in a way unique in the region. Finally, a walk through the cellar labyrinth between hundreds of barrels makes the experience truly unforgettable.
