Introduction

Kőszeg is a city rightfully renowned in the Sopron Historical Wine Region, with a winemaking tradition spanning centuries. Viticulture has been a cornerstone of the city's economy for generations. This is proven by the fact that since 1740, on April 24th, Saint George's Day, vine shoots have been registered in the "Szőlő Jövésének Könyve" (The Book of Vine Growth). At that time, nearly every family was involved in viticulture, and ours is no exception—a Poncihter (Kőszeg vineyard) family. Our activity has a long generational history. Even my grandparents and great-grandparents practiced viticulture as a side occupation. In 1994, my father took over the business from his father-in-law and started the first major planting with 2 hectares. In 1999, another 2 hectares were planted. During this period, I completed my viticulture and winemaking studies in Budapest. Since then, I have taken over the management of the business. Subsequently, more plantings followed, and we now operate 10 hectares.

Our region predominantly grows red grape varieties. In our vineyard, we also focus on these varieties (Kékfrankos, Blauburger, Pinot Noir, Merlot). With the increasing demand for white wines, the proportion of white grape areas has been steadily growing. We also planted white grape varieties, starting with Chardonnay and then Olaszrizling on 2 hectares. Additionally, as demand for Rosé wine increases, we have also been making more of this wine. We produce our wines by controlling the processes: we cool the white and rosé wines, while the red wines are fermented at 28°C for 12-14 days. We mainly use steel tanks, but for red wines destined for bottling, we age them in oak barrels.

We primarily sell the produced wines as bulk wine in our own wine bar, but we also supply local and regional hospitality venues. The best-quality wines are bottled.

In the cozy garden of our wine bar in Kőszeg, we occasionally welcome guests with live music during spring to autumn, offering a perfect setting for wine tasting and dancing. For those interested in old traditions and winemaking tools, they can view my grandparents' collection in the winery’s own museum.
