Bodrogköz is a unified natural landscape in the northeastern region of the Carpathian Basin. It lies between the natural borders of the Tisza, Bodrog, and Latorca rivers, but in 1920, the new borders divided it. The southern part remained in Hungary, while Upper Bodrogköz joined the Czechoslovak Republic. After the Treaty of Trianon, ethnographic studies mainly focused on the Hungarian part of the historical landscape, unfortunately neglecting the region of Upper Bodrogköz.

The area has written records of viticulture dating back to the 1300s. Villages engaged in winemaking typically included Bodrogszerdahely, Kiskövesd, Nagykövesd, Bodrogszentes, Kisgéres, and Királyhelmec, which were grouped around two mountain ranges, the Kövesdi and Királyhelmeci Mountains.

From a winemaking perspective, Királyhelmec was the most significant, as it contains the largest contiguous areas suitable for viticulture. These areas attracted the nobility as early as the 1400s due to their excellent conditions. Similarly important were the Szentesi, Kövesdi, and Szerdahelyi mountains, where many free noble vineyards were also located according to historical sources.
