Introduction

József Becse, the winemaker, lives in the village of Muzsla, where he creates masterful wines. This small village holds significant historical importance in the world of wine, as it was from here that wine was supplied to the Esztergom Archdiocese, and wines from this region, as well as from the nearby village of Ebed, were served at the tables of the old Catholic priests.

The Muzsla vineyards are located to the south, with soils composed of brown sandy clay and forest soil. The presence of limestone in this soil is crucial, as it is responsible for the exceptional acidity found in the grapes and the wine. The quality of the limestone gives the wine its structure, and experts suggest that this soil is similar to that of Burgundy.

When Mr. Becse started his winemaking, he initially farmed on 2 to 2.5 hectares. Since then, this area has grown to 13 hectares. He adapted the grape varieties to the region’s conditions, but having previously worked in South Germany in grape breeding, he also brought with him varieties that were unknown in Slovakia at the time. These include Apollo, a cross between Kékfrankos and Kékoportó; Cabernet Dorsa, a cross between Dornfelder and Cabernet Sauvignon; and Cabernet Kubin, a cross between Kékfrankos and Cabernet Sauvignon.

In addition, he planted Furmint for his own enjoyment, which thrives excellently here. The only drawback is that the yield is high, so unused grape clusters must be removed. The winemaker applies this practice to other varieties as well to ensure that only the best-quality wines are produced in his cellar. The distinctive feature of the Muzsla vineyards lies in the high sugar and alcohol content of the grapes.
