The Turay Family Winery has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The family was granted noble status in 1663 by Emperor Leopold I. Historical research reveals that the Turay family has been cultivating grapes for 12 generations, though during the tumultuous historical periods of the 20th century, the family lost its vineyards and land holdings. Our current winery and cellar became the family’s property in February 2002.
The cellar was originally built by the Capuchin Order around 250 years ago and expanded with a wine press house in the 1920s. The building and its 3000 m² vineyard area became private property in 1948. In the attic of the building, a fresco depicting four patron saints can be seen. The building served as a meeting place for clergy and a location for ceremonies. The original cellar was dug into the ground, most of it vaulted with brick, although a part of it remains in its original state for visitors to admire. The building’s lower level included a small stable (with space for two donkeys) and a wine press house, which has now been transformed into a tasting room.
In the fall of 2006, we began replanting the vineyards. The planting process continues, and in the fall of 2018, we acquired an additional 0.4 hectares of land, where we planted resistant grape varieties such as Solarist, Kékfrankos, Borsmenta, and Olaszrizling. We carefully select varieties suited to our terroir, where the clay, marl, and limestone soil complement our existing vines: Rozália, Olaszrizling, Generosa, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. As a result, our wines consistently exhibit minerality, a hallmark of our terroir.
Since 2018, we have been practicing bio-organic farming, using bio sprays (contact) to strengthen the immune system of our existing vines. As a result, both our winery and vineyards received bio-organic certification in 2021. To further enhance our synergy with nature, we switched to biodynamic farming in the fall of 2022, based on Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy theory. To ensure exceptional quality, we limit yields, selectively prune the shoots, and practice green harvesting. The harvest is done by hand, and the grapes are processed gently, allowing us to create wine from high-quality must. In the winemaking process, we follow the philosophy that the terroir speaks and we listen, using both oxidative and reductive techniques to craft our wines.
Viticulture and winemaking are jointly managed by Turay Kamill and his father, Turay István. The family, including Kamill’s wife, Truszek Tímea, and their daughter Turay Sára, all actively participate in the winery’s operations. The best helpers include Nektár, the German Shepherd, who loyally walks alongside the tractor, as well as Othello and Furmint, the puli sibling pair, and Rozi, Bubi, Kaczor, Muci, and Csóka, the lambs, who are the best row cultivators. The combination of solid knowledge and dedication makes quality viticulture and winemaking possible, as evidenced by our achievements.
The Neszmély Wine Region is unique in itself, but the true value of the surrounding landscape is fully appreciated when viewed from the Turay Family Winery’s panoramic viewpoint. While the family serves dishes straight from the oven, guests can experience a real gastronomic delight. We also organize wine tastings accompanied by wine snacks to ensure that our visitors enjoy exceptional hospitality.
