Our family has been living and working in the Etyek wine region since 1993. Initially, we sought to introduce the distillation traditions brought from Vojvodina to the village. However, within a few years, we found ourselves helping with grape harvests in the local Swabian community, which sparked our love for viticulture and encouraged us to explore winemaking. We received immense support and guidance from local winemakers and formed many friendships with colleagues from other Hungarian wine regions.
Over time, our entire family found their place in this world, and now two generations work side by side, supporting each other. Over the past 25 years, our estate has evolved significantly. The early days of artisanal solutions, like using pasta strainers, have been replaced by much more deliberate winemaking techniques. Despite modern tools and advanced methods, we have always aimed to maintain a familial, natural, and welcoming atmosphere at our estate.
Our shared dream was to create a self-sustaining farm where technology and nature coexist harmoniously—Wi-Fi alongside ladybugs, pneumatic presses with hand plunging, and air-conditioned tractors with hand hoes. Our life is an open book for our guests, with new chapters being written every day. Among our many plans for the wine region, we implement one or two each year, focusing on gradual, organic growth while patiently looking to the future.
Organic Transition and Sustainability
After years of planning and gaining experience, we transitioned to organic farming in 2015. This allows us to grow even healthier grapes and produce better wines. Organic plant protection is just one pillar of this effort. Composting, renewable energy integration, sustainable energy management, greening our environment, and eliminating chemicals have become core elements of our lives and philosophy.
The exceptional climate and valuable calcareous soil of this region offer endless potential for viticulture. Our goal is to uncover every secret of our 7-hectare estate and harvest grapes in the best possible condition year after year.
Sparkling Wine and Etyek’s Future
A major chapter in Etyek’s story is being dedicated to sparkling wine. We believe that ongoing professional development will establish a distinctive style for Etyek, enabling it to stand out nationally and internationally. To this end, we are working with local winemakers to establish Hungary’s first sparkling wine appellation here in Etyek.
Beyond Organic Farming
For over 20 years, we’ve sought the best solutions not only in viticulture and winemaking but also in tourism, hospitality, and branding. Mediocrity has never been acceptable for us—we strive for excellence in everything we do.
This is why we shifted from conventional to organic plant protection, which continues to surprise and teach us even after two decades in viticulture. For us, organic farming is about more than just gentle spraying; it’s about respecting plants and nature and aligning ourselves with ancient laws. Instead of taming nature, we aim to live alongside and serve it.
Our efforts don’t stop at renewable energy or composting. In our newly established herb garden, we grow most of our spices, medicinal herbs, kitchen vegetables, and teas. Our vision includes creating a self-sustaining farm, blending 21st-century technology and knowledge. One of our dreams is to craft a digestive bitter from homegrown herbs, a long-cherished idea of Laci Hernyák. In the future, we hope to add free-range poultry, sheep, and lambs to enrich the daily life of our family and estate.
After a successful three-year organic trial period, we began transitioning to official organic certification in 2018. Following the four-year certification period, we will achieve full organic status. Certification papers aside, we have fully embraced the organic mindset and cannot imagine living any other way.
