When you read 'Villány', you probably think of beautiful red wines, the Villány wine cellars, and lively wine tastings. However, Villány and its surroundings offer much more than this; you wouldn't believe how many things are waiting for you in this wine region.
The heart of the wine region is known mainly for its cellar row and wine-related programs, but if we look a bit broader at Villány, the neighboring towns and villages await with many attractions and interesting programs.
One of the most beautifully preserved medieval historical relics in Southern Transdanubia is Siklós Castle. It was the filming location for the legendary 1960s TV series 'The Captain of Tenkes'. The castle was completely renovated in 2011. Various programs are often held in the castle, but even if you don't stumble upon a concert or theater performance, it's still worth visiting. The castle is very beautiful, and the visitor center, created during the renovation, faithfully presents the lives of the former castle dwellers and the history of Siklós Castle. Indeed, in Baranya, it's not only in Pécs where you can come across Turkish-era relics. Close to Siklós Castle, a few minutes' walk away, is the mosque built under the leadership of Malkocs Bey, which has been part of Siklós since the mid-16th century. Over the centuries, it has been a residence and was also in very poor condition, but a complete renovation took place between 1990 and 1993. The renovation was so successful that the building received the Europa Nostra Award for outstanding restoration. Nowadays, the mosque also serves as an ethnographic exhibition space, worth a visit.
Due to Marian apparitions experienced since the 16th century, Máriagyűd and its twin-towered, Baroque-style sanctuary have become one of the country's most popular pilgrimage sites. It's recommended to spend some time in the area if you're looking for spiritual rejuvenation, but even if you just want to admire a beautiful church and its surroundings, you'll find what you're looking for here. Find everything important about the church and Máriagyűd, now part of Siklós, by CLICKING HERE.

For art lovers, the open-air sculpture exhibition set up on the grassy area in front of the former quarry is a must-see. The collection of installations is also a memento of an era when experimental sculptors did not get the opportunity to place their works in public spaces. According to some guidebooks, it's mandatory to take a selfie with at least one sculpture here, and although that's not a bad program, in our opinion, the beauty discovered in the compositions harmonizing with the environment is also worth a few hours of your trip to Villány. Find more info and interesting facts about the sculpture park HERE.
Of course, you can't leave the Villány wine region without having attended at least one Villány wine tasting. On this region heavily focused on red wines, you can choose from both small and large cellars. The iconic Villány cellar row is very atmospheric, but we recommend unforgettable wine tastings not only here but also outside of Villány. It's worth booking these tastings in advance if you know the exact date of your trip; it's not uncommon for the "FULLY BOOKED" sign to be put up.
Gere Tamás & Zsolt Winery / Villány / Villány Wine Region
An indispensable winery when it comes to Villány, and not just because the family-owned winery was established more than 30 years ago. Tamás Gere is still mentioned today among the 'Villányi Five,' who are credited with elevating Villány, and to some extent the Hungarian wine industry, after the change of regime. His son, Zsolt, has also proven over the past decades that he is an exceptional professional in his field. They are very comfortable with both light and robust red wines, so if you're in Villány, it's a must to visit here!

Wassmann Biodynamic Wines / Pécsdevecser / Villány Wine Region
Ralf and Susann moved from Germany to Pécsdevecser in 1998 and have been tirelessly building their 100% organic winery ever since. Their openness and kindness seem to know no bounds, and they approach viticulture and winemaking in a way that few do. Naturally, their natural wines are also quite excellent, although they are a bit different from the usual, but they are definitely worth a try!
Gergen Estate / Siklós - Máriagyűd / Villány Wine Region
Near the Máriagyűd Shrine, you'll find the Gergen Estate's cellar, which dates back to the Turkish era. Here, they will introduce you to 7 Villány wines, including the region's flagship Villányi Franc. The wines are fantastic, and the 500-year-old cellar is an experience in itself, which would be a sin to miss if you are in the Villány wine region.
The attractions listed above do not give a complete picture of the sights of the Villány wine region, but if you visit just half of the above, you are in for a very rewarding weekend. And if you get tired of the tourist attractions and the wine tastings before and after, head to the Harkányi Thermal and Beach Bath, where you can rest all your tiredness away.
