What Makes Szent György Hill Special?

A Bit of History

Let’s start with a bit of history: Szent György Hill is part of the Central Transdanubian unit (Szávai), which was an active volcano millions of years ago. The flowing lava from continuous eruptions formed the unique basalt columns and flows that make the hill so distinctive and recognizable.

The basalt cover wasn’t uniform everywhere; in many places, it didn’t completely cover the ancient seabed. Over millions of years, these uncovered areas eroded, while the basalt-covered parts remained hundreds of meters higher. Today, you can still see the ancient seabed level on Szent György Hill, which is why it’s called a “witness hill.”

Regarding the surrounding settlements, most historical memories are tied to Tapolca, dating back as far as 5500 BCE, showing that houses stood in the area during the Neolithic period. As for when winemaking began, historians differ, but some believe the Celts took advantage of the area's great conditions. However, it's certain that the Romans actively cultivated grapes around Tapolca.

The town itself only got its current name much later, in the 12th century, with “Tapolca” being of Slavic origin, meaning "warm water spring." Winemaking flourished over the centuries, and by the early 1900s, 15 of Tapolca’s 25 major merchants were engaged in the wine trade. Today, the wine region is experiencing a renaissance, much like other Balaton wine regions.

Natural Characteristics

One of Szent György Hill's best attributes for viticulture is its low temperature fluctuation. The area isn’t prone to drastic changes, which is great for the vines. Additionally, the southern slopes of the hill receive plenty of sunshine—about 2,000 hours per year. The typically mild winds and annual rainfall of around 650 mm also create ideal conditions for winemaking.

Why Visit the Wineries on Szent György Hill?

Unlike many regions in Hungary where classic vineyards are disappearing in favor of residential areas, Szent György Hill remains a true vineyard haven. Visitors can wander among authentic vine rows and experience winemaking traditions that date back millennia, all while enjoying modern conveniences.

Local winemakers focus on producing organic wines with sustainable practices, ensuring harmony with nature as part of their core philosophy.

Must-Try Wines

What better way to start the list than with Olaszrizling, a staple of the Balaton Uplands? The white wines here have a slightly bitter taste with hints of almond. A glass of Pinot Gris (Szürkebarát) is also a must-try, as the full-bodied, oak-aged wines from Szent György Hill are a delight.

Kéknyelű is another emblematic grape variety in the region. It thrives in the volcanic soil, and its spicy elegance is truly unmatched. And don't miss the Hárslevelű wines, which are well worth tasting if you find yourself near Tapolca.

Sights to See

The hill itself, with its basalt columns and stone gates, is a natural wonder. Don’t miss the Dragon Cave, a nearly 10-meter cavity covered with fallen basalt organ pipes. The Dragon’s Lair, as it's also called, is steeped in legend, with the most famous saying it was once home to dragons defeated by Saint George.

In Tapolca, the cave system is a must-see, especially the Tavas Cave, but also make time for the city museum and the Holy Trinity Statue in the main square. The "Szent György-hegy hajnalig" event series in summer is an unforgettable experience, where you can also visit the wineries.
