The narrow eastern part of the Szekszárd Hills wine region has been known since Roman times. 3rd century ancient Roman sources testify to viticulture, as grape cultivation began in the region by order of Emperor Probus, and the Szekszárd early Christian sarcophagus, which depicts a vine.
Thanks to the Rača fighting alongside the Turkish troops, the Kadarka appeared in the region, where there had been only white wine production before, and the technology of soaking on the skin became established. The development of viticulture was influenced by German settlers arriving in the 18th century when the first red wines received barrel aging.
The region's conditions greatly contribute to the production of high-quality wines. The wine region faces south, characterized by a warm summer and sunny autumn, and it is the first hill that catches the warm air currents coming from the Alföld. Its enclosed basins are neither windy nor cold. The surface of the Danube also reflects sunlight, and the mass of water moderates the effects of extreme temperature changes. The area is characterized by deep-layered loamy loess soil, and the most special red wines come from clayey, mostly grey and red clay areas.
Kadarka is now grown on only about 1% of the wine region, replaced by Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot, which are safer to produce. In addition, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Blauburger, Portugieser, Bíborkadarka and Kékmedoc varieties can also be found in the region.
The most well-known wine variety of the region is the Szekszárd Bikavér, the name of which originates from János Garay, a poet from Szekszárd. The wine, made from a blend of at least four grape varieties, is composed of at least 50% Kékfrankos and Kadarka.
White grape varieties occupy just over a fifth of the region, typically olaszrizling, chardonnay, riesling but also grüner veltliner, sauvignon blanc, cserszegi fűszeres, pinot blanc can also be found.
